When and How to Create Large Paintings

When and How to Create Large Paintings

Is it time to upscale your Art? In this video I discuss why people often go large too soon and what you need to consider before you decide to create larger work. I share my process of painting large scale, show the tools I use and invite you to come along with me as I work on a large painting.

How to use the COLOUR SHAPER

One of my favourite tools is the Colour Shaper. In this video I show you how I use it to build beautiful layers of transparent and opaque layers into your painting surface. It's great for creating sharp edges along with gorgeous 'accidental' marks and depth into an abstract painting. Once you know how, this will become one of your favourite tools too. It's easy... watch and see.

Create Depth and Interest in your Painting with Stencils

Create Depth and Interest in your Painting with Stencils

This video takes a look at the stencils I made and teaches you how to use stencils to create depth, direction and interest into your paintings. In this video I explain: How to choose colours in order to create contrast and direction in your painting and how to use stencil shapes that mimic negative or positive shapes to create rhythm and interest.

How To Paint A Memory In Under An Hour

How To Paint A Memory In Under An Hour

In this video, I will take you through the process of creating a painting based on a memory. We will use the technique of building up layers of paint and line to create depth and meaning. This is a very personal project which helps us draw upon our emotions and experiences, this creates something unique and special.

How To Improve Your Painting by Using Contrast

How To Improve Your Painting by Using Contrast

When we're painting, we often struggle to make certain parts of it work. And while struggling with that part, we begin to forget other things around it. But by doing this, we're avoiding making good parts of the picture even better by putting something opposite next to them. In this video I'll explain how you can use this 'opposite' element in your painting to help the good parts of your work shine.

How To Write An Artist's Statement

How To Write An Artist's Statement

As artists, we'll bend over backwards to encourage connection with our audience. We do it in paint and we can support that with words. For a lot of us, we find it easier in paint than words, but we can all speak so we do know how to use words.... it just takes a bit of effort and isn't as much fun.

Creating Your Best Art

Creating Your Best Art

In this weeks Vlog I share with you two aspects of my process that I think make the biggest difference to creating my best work. Watch the Vlog.

Authenticity In Your ART

Authenticity In Your ART

One of the ways I do this when I'm building my layers at the beginning of a painting is to embed the work with drawings, words, shapes, colour, and collage that has direct relevance to my life at that moment.

Watch the Vlog to see this process demonstrated in my work, and stick around to the end to see bossy old Ginny.

Playing with Paint

Playing with Paint

When I start my paintings I begin with play. I had to learn to play with the paint and the tools and whatever else I had to use just like a curious kid. "What happens if I use this?" "What happens if I do that?"

I recorded it, so you can see what it takes to play if you are like I was and sometimes find it hard to let go, forget about what you're making, and just get lost in the MAKING. Watch the Vlog.

The Hero In Your Abstract Painting

The Hero In Your Abstract Painting

One of the questions I ask myself when I'm trying to nut out my paintings is "What is this painting all about - where are my heroes?"

When I get this figured out it's so much easier to know what needs to be done next. Sometimes the hero can get lost in the crowd - so once I've identified what are the heroes, I can clear away the distractions and make some space for the main players to shine.

Free & Loose Botanical Drawing

Free & Loose Botanical Drawing

Develop a loose and dynamic approach to drawing botanicals, using simple line and colour combinations, pen, pencil and paint.

Learn how to read the foliage and structure of the subject then create rich texture, form and detail in your drawings by making expressive marks with a brush, pen or pencil.
