Demonstrating How to Include Imagery in Abstract Art

Demonstrating How to Include Imagery in Abstract Art

Who needs Still Life, a Nude or a Landscape when you can create a painting from your thoughts and dreams? In this demonstration I build a painting by using colours, imagery, words and shapes that come straight from my subconscious. It results in a strange world, yet is somehow familiar to me and includes my pets, favourite colours and patterns. It also includes a lot which makes no sense but is somehow pleasing to me.

Watch the video and then create your strange and beautiful world.

Building Layers with Mixedmedia: Collage, Stencils, Painting, and Drawing

Building Layers with Mixedmedia: Collage, Stencils, Painting, and Drawing

In this demo, I’m creating a painting in my sketchbook by layering collage, paint, and drawing media. I’ll talk you through what I’m thinking about as I apply each technique and what I’m trying to achieve.

The most important focus is to be playful and experimental and have a keen eye for discovering what you love in the work. In this painting, I loved the colour combinations, the shapes I found, and the drawing that weaved it’s way through the paint.

Who to listen to about YOUR Art

Who to listen to about YOUR Art

Seeking advice from the wrong people can derail our art and steer us in the wrong direction. It’s so important we don’t fall into the trap of asking the wrong people just because it’s convenient. We need to find company that supports our work and helps us to make our best work. When we ask the wrong people we get bad advice and it’s often biased towards making work to please others - often our nearest and dearest. In this video I talk about seeking the opinion of others, why it’s important and where to find the best advice.

Reviewing Techniques and Media Used in My NEW Paintings

Reviewing Techniques and Media Used in My NEW Paintings

In this video, I reveal four newly finished paintings and talk about the techniques I used and the combinations of media used in each one. I also share how these paintings direct me to new work and what I want to focus on more in these.

This practice of reviewing your work when it’s completed is really important in understanding how your work is evolving and where the clues lie for future work.

I talk about media: paint, ink, and drawing media and how and why I’m using them in my work.

My Painting Process from Beginning to End

My Painting Process from Beginning to End

In this video I’m creating a big red painting from beginning to end. I’m often asked how long it takes to create a painting. Well this video will give you an insight into my process. My paintings are created by going on a journey: playing, experimenting with media, and looking for direction in design by what excites me.

👉Take note of how I alternate between using acrylic paint and dry media: pencils, pastels and oil sticks.

👉Look at how I integrate collage at the beginning of the painting to provide surface interest.

👉Watch me use templates to create unique and interesting shapes.

👉Listen as I explain how I know I’m finished at the end of the video.

Inviting your BEST into your Painting

Inviting your BEST into your Painting

Taking the best elements from past work for direction to move forward is the best way to develop continuity and strengthen your own personal style. Watch as I review paintings and collages I’ve done over the past year in my sketchbook and then create a new work bringing those ideas back into play.

How to draw with character and expression

How to draw with character and expression

This is my favourite drawing technique - it results in drawings full of expressive character while also developing strong observational skills. I love this style of drawing because it’s quick, but the results are powerful and surprising. Still life, portrait, landscape drawings can easily capture the essence of the subject and offer creative options for future explorations in paint.

Create Structure & Variety in your Abstract Art with this Easy Method

Create Structure & Variety in your Abstract Art with this Easy Method

With a limited palette and a few quick steps I’ll show you how to create a beautiful varied and interesting surface. Then I’ll show you how to create a balanced composition by rearranging squares in a grid format. This provides structure while also allowing the variety and combinations that are so compelling in abstract art. Only requiring a few colours and materials this is an exercise that anyone can do and produce great results. Give it a go!

How to use the COLOUR SHAPER

One of my favourite tools is the Colour Shaper. In this video I show you how I use it to build beautiful layers of transparent and opaque layers into your painting surface. It's great for creating sharp edges along with gorgeous 'accidental' marks and depth into an abstract painting. Once you know how, this will become one of your favourite tools too. It's easy... watch and see.

Using Drawing & Masking To Create An Abstract Painting

Using Drawing & Masking To Create An Abstract Painting

Combining plant forms or representational elements in an abstract painting requires a balancing act where one element doesn’t dominate the composition.

In this demonstration, I’ll show you an effective technique to combine botanical forms with a beautiful abstract paint surface. You’ll see how to integrate various elements and combinations of marks and forms to create a successful strong abstract painting.
